About Finisterre....and a vid' : leaving the Bifa

"It's been one hell of a year! Over the next few days we'll be taking a look back at 2014 starting today with this beauty.
Charles Dance is not a name synonymous with surfing, let alone cold water surfing, but when one of our finest films to date was just about finished, it was missing something. As many of you know, we are 20 strong, we do not have deep pockets, or an arsenal of resources, but w...
e have belief – a deep belief in what we’re doing and the direction we want to take it. We didn’t think in a million years that Charles Dance, Ernest Capbert our brand director, Chris McClean our film director and a handful of talented others would be in the Red Bull studios, putting together a voice over that would pull at all our heart strings.
Mr. Dance, you’ve left us with an evening we’ll never forget."

from an interview with Graham Moore : The Imitation Games screenwriter

AD: Charles Dance was a great addition to the cast.
GM:
He’s great to write for. I remember being on set and he would ask me a question, and it felt like I was being kept for detention. I was always like, "Oh my God! What if he asks me a question and I don’t know the answer, am I going to get into trouble?"
Then I remembered he’s just asking me a question because he cares about my opinion. I’d be like, "Charles Dance is asking me a question, that’s pretty cool."
remember Cumberbatch was there in 2008

Facts...casting

about Dracula Untold
0°)Dance’s role is pretty much solely just to spout exposition and explain the plot, but he totally looks the part, and was surely a much better choice for the role than Charlie Cox, who is 36 years his junior and originally filmed the scenes before being replaced with Dance.
http://whatculture.com/film/12-awesome-2014-performances-otherwise-awful-movies.php/3
1°)The character should have been played by the English actor Charles Dance. In fact the biographer of Denys Finch Hatton begged the director Sydney Pollock to cast Charles Dance as Denys Finch Hatton.....aboutactorcharlesdance.blogspot.fr/
But it turned out that Charles Dance had been cast opposite Meryl Streep in a previous film and it was felt that the chemistry was no good between them and more importantly I think probably Robert Redford had a financial investment in the script. It was of course a very wise decision from a financial point of view to give Redford the role and one of the reasons why the film was such a success.

2°) The filmmakers met with Grant, who was keen to do the film and was subsequently named  alongside Sharni Vinson as the nurse whom the comatose Patrick tries to seduce using his psychokinetic powers, and Rachel Griffiths as the matron.
The budget was funded by a combination of Screen Australia, Film Victoria, Screen Queensland, the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund, the 40 percent producer rebate, private investment and gap financing from Bankside.
But it wasn't enough to cover Grant's fee so he dropped out and Bankside was asked to supply more names, with Dance prominent among them. Dance signed up and shooting is due to start at Melbourne's Docklands Studios on November 12. The director is very happy to be working with Dance, who's made a career out of playing villains and is starring in TV's Game of Thrones.
With amusement, he recounted how he was accidentally sent the wrong script for Last Action Hero, where his character’s entry into the film is described in the words "the door opens and there stands Alan Rickman". On the first day of shooting, Dance wore a T-shirt which read "I’m cheaper than Alan Rickman".

ONE of the Sydney Festival's big drawcards, the British actor Michael Gambon, has been forced to pull out a little more than a week before the event opens.
He was to have appeared in Eh Joe as part of the Beckett season presented by Dublin's Gate Theatre, but the festival said yesterday that he could not make the trip for personal reasons.
He will be replaced by another distinguished British performer, Charles Dance, seen recently on the ABC in the BBC series Bleak House. Late yesterday his image had replaced that of Gambon on the festival's website
The role of Gerry -the smart, intellectual, charming and tall British politician- was written with Albert Finney (Erin Brokovitch) in mind. But though Shirley is a good friend of the talented actor, she couldn't convince him to take on the role. She tried to picture who she would like to be in bed with -Richard Harris, James Fox and Gabriel Byrne were all approached and successively turned down the role.
Charles Dance was available and willing to take on the role of Gerry.

There's a touch of bad-news-good-news about this Sunday's sell-out gala performance of The Hollow Crown at Frome's Merlin Theatre. The bad news is that health problems have forced Sir Nigel Hawthorne, to withdraw from the star-studded lineup. But Frome Festival director Martin Bax was able to announce that Sir Nigel's old friend Charles Dance will take his place. "It is a great blow to all of us, but I am thrilled that Charles Dance has been able to step in", he said

Charles about Ali G

You’re not renowned for comedy. How did you get Ali G?
I was asked. When Mike Gambon and I were doing Gosford Park together, I went into make-up one morning and Mike said: ‘I’ve got this Ali G film.’ I said: ‘So have I.’ He replied: ‘I’ll do it if you do.’ We share the same agent so we went in and thought it would be fun for a few weeks. It was nice as – you’re right – I don’t do much comedy. In this business you are what you are deemed to be and if you don’t do much comedy you aren’t asked to do much.

and the director of Space Truckers :
FF: And with Dennis Hopper, Stephen Dorff, Debi Mazar and Charles Dance you had quite a fantastic cast (note to self – I need to see this ASAP).
SG: Yeah, a great cast. Charles Dance was wonderful, we had a great time. He was really funny. All of them liked the script and really wanted to do it. Charles Dance saw me and told me that it was his daughter who had asked him to do the film. She had read the script and said "dad, you’ve really got to do this one". There was one scene I remember – he plays a guy who is a sort of cyborg, he’s half man and half machine – Debbie Mazar pulls all of his equipment apart and he’s lying on the floor with all of these fluids squirting out of him and he looked at me and he said "this is all my daughter’s fault, this is the end of my career".
