Director Gary Shore about Charles in Dracula untold

JA: I don't think there could have been a better vampire for this film than Charles Dance.
GS: We were actually trying to get Gary Oldman for that role since he was Dracula in Coppola's film, he would have nailed it. We also talked about getting Christopher Lee while he was around, God rest his soul.

JA: I don't know if it was intentional, but when Dance licks the blood off of Vlad's neck it reminded me of that scene in Alien 3 where Ripley is cornered by the Xenomorph...
GS: That wasn't a mistake. I was doing that because of the Charles Dance connection and I wondered if I'd actually get away with it. You're actually the first person to pick up on that. That's funny. I was always asking Charles between takes about his experience on Alien 3 and he actually had to tell me to shut the fuck up at one point because I was asking too many questions. He didn't say that exactly, it was in a much politer way.

0°)Dance’s role is pretty much solely just to spout exposition and explain the plot, but he totally looks the part, and was surely a much better choice for the role than Charlie Cox, who is 36 years his junior and originally filmed the scenes before being replaced with Dance.

From an interview with Gary Shore...and

The cave scene with Charles Dance was fantastic – what was that like to shoot?

Charles was an intimidating character both on screen and off to say the least! We got on very well. We had a couple of days… we were in the process of doing re-shoots (which is mayhem as it’s happening). We were only able to cast Charles 3 days before. We had to get all the prosthetic make up done and costumes designed and we only had 3 days with him when it came round to it, so everything was fast. I barely got to spend a lot of time with him but again, he was a very prepared professional actor who came in with his own ideas.
The whole scene between himself and Luke – these are two guys that are very proficient in what they do, both with their own ideas. The only thing I could do is get out of their way and let’s see what they wanted to do with the scene – how they’re going to move around it. And then I started working and moving the camera accordingly to try and give them as much freedom as possible. It’s a 6 or 7 minute long scene of dialogue… that’s their stage, let them do what they need to do to make themselves feel comfortable and then I will walk around accordingly.
