Hilary Boyd's new novel is MEET ME ON THE BEACH, about a woman who finds herself becoming too close to a married vicar, and who must work out the strength of her feelings for another man (Quercus world English - filming on Boyd's Thursdays in the Park, with Charles Dance directing and starring, begins next May).

So what lessons should marketers listen to when considering using sport to build their brands?

- First, to talk to a fan, you have to act like a fan. Your customers are passionate about sport, and brands need to find an authentic role. The key is always to demonstrate knowledge and insight – you have to communicate credibly and do it at the right moment. We chose Charles Dance to front the 'Team Talk' film, as his appeal extended beyond rugby fans and into the 'big eventers' we had already identified. Charles is also a huge rugby fan, so he spoke with real conviction and authenticity.

"We raised lots of money on the day and receive a donation from the event organisers which last year was more than £800, all monies raised going towards helping Dalmatians in need. We met lots of celebrities Charles Dance’s granddaughter now owns a stuffed Dalmatian called Purdy!  The event was hosted by Mark Abraham celebrity vet, who is championing the rights of puppies and he and his team are looking to change the law to make puppy farming a thing of the past."

...Because of the show's expansive cast and various, far-flung filming locations, there has never been an occasion when every actor on the series has been in the same room. So it was several seasons before Nairn had an opportunity to meet Charles Dance, who plays Tywin Lannister on the series and is the co-star Nairn says he admires most as an actor. But the first time he met Dance, Lairn abandoned his co-star mid-conversation because one of his idols, Sally Field, happened to walk by.

If you want to know if Field has the power to transform a 6'10" Irish actor into a sputtering, fawning fan girl, the answer is yes. Lairn lost all ability to have a normal conversation in the presence of Field, and he says the sight of him towering over while asking her if she was enjoying her night probably terrorized her.

Lairn meant to apologize to Dance for his inadvertent rudeness, but the two have not had the occasion to meet since;
